Toward 3D Retrieval of Exoplanet Atmospheres: Assessing Thermochemical Equilibrium Estimation Methods

چکیده
Abstract Characterizing exoplanetary atmospheres via Bayesian retrievals requires assuming some chemistry model, such as thermochemical equilibrium or parameterized abundances. The higher-resolution data offered by upcoming telescopes enable more complex models within retrieval frameworks. Yet many codes that model processes like photochemistry and vertical transport are computationally expensive, directly incorporating them into a 1D can result in prohibitively long execution times. Additionally, phase-curve observations with motivate 2D 3D models, further exacerbating the lengthy runtime for frameworks models. Here we compare approximation methods based on their speed accuracy respect to Gibbs energy-minimization code. We find that, while all offer orders-of-magnitude reductions computational cost, neural network surrogate perform accurately than other approaches considered, achieving median absolute dex error of <0.03 phase space considered. While our results study suggests higher-dimensional could be incorporated this modeling approach.

A Temperature and Abundance Retrieval Method for Exoplanet Atmospheres
We present a new method to retrieve molecular abundances and temperature profiles from exoplanet atmosphere photometry and spectroscopy. We run millions of one-dimensional (1D) atmosphere models in order to cover the large range of allowed parameter space. In order to run such a large number of models, we have developed a parametric pressure–temperature (P–T) profile coupled with line-by-line r...
متن کاملExoplanet Atmospheres and Photochemistry
Over 150 extrasolar planets are known to orbit sun-like stars. A growing number of them (9 to date) are transiting “hot Jupiters” whose physical characteristics can be measured. Atmospheres of two of these planets have already been detected. We summarize the atmosphere detections and useful upper limits, focusing on the MOST albedo upper limit and H exosphere detection for HD209458b as the most...
متن کاملExoplanet atmospheres: A theoretical outlook
With over two dozen exoplanet atmospheres observed today, the field of exoplanet atmospheres is solidly established. The highlights of exoplanet atmosphere studies include: detection of molecular spectral features; constraints on atmospheric vertical temperature structure; detection of day-night temperature gradients; and a new numerical approach to atmosphere temperature and abundance retrieva...
متن کاملThe Radiation Environment of Exoplanet Atmospheres
Exoplanets are born and evolve in the radiation and particle environment created by their host star. The host star’s optical and infrared radiation heats the exoplanet’s lower atmosphere and surface, while the ultraviolet, extreme ultraviolet and X-radiation control the photochemistry and mass loss from the exoplanet’s upper atmosphere. Stellar radiation, especially at the shorter wavelengths, ...
متن کاملSpectra as windows into exoplanet atmospheres.
Understanding a planet's atmosphere is a necessary condition for understanding not only the planet itself, but also its formation, structure, evolution, and habitability. This requirement puts a premium on obtaining spectra and developing credible interpretative tools with which to retrieve vital planetary information. However, for exoplanets, these twin goals are far from being realized. In th...
